Prague has more than 100 streams with a total length of almost 364 km and over 170 water structures  (dams, ponds, retention reservoirs including dry polders, and stormwater settling tanks) owned by the City. Their management and maintenance is funded through the Environmental Protection Department of Prague City Hall, which works closely with the public service organisation Lesy hl. m. Prahy on the individual activities.

Lesy hl. m. Prahy maintain and manage the streams and water bodies on the City’s behalf.

As part of its construction work it carries out the necessary repairs to water management equipment and to the water structures themselves, and takes part in complete restoration projects.

Across the city, Lesy hl. m. Prahy also:

  • check the condition and safety of water management equipment, 
  • maintain the technology of water structures and their building structures, 
  • clean settling tanks, 
  • remove obstacles in watercourses, litter, illegal dumps and deposited material, 
  • monitor water quality, 
  • look after the vegetation along watercourses and reservoirs, mow the grass around them and remove invasive plants. 
  • As the administrator of the watercourses they issue opinions on building projects that could affect the regime of the watercourses, and check that those opinions are followed. 

In Prague, watercourses are in some cases also managed by Lesy ČR, s. p., Povodí Labe, s. p. and Povodí Vltavy, s. p.
