One of the places Czechs can rightly be proud of is Vítkov hill. A well-known date from the Hussite wars — 14 July 1420 — together with the National Memorial makes Vítkov an important point in our history. Its recreational role should not be overlooked either: there are playgrounds here and its paths are much used by sportspeople — you will always meet a runner or a cyclist. The park covers more than 30 hectares.
Vítkov offers fine views of Prague, especially of nearby Žižkov and Karlín, and the lawns invite you to sit down and picnic. The northern slopes were once covered by forest, later replaced by vineyards; after the Hussite wars, however, the slopes were left bare. Today the area is overgrown with trees once more.
