Letn\u00e1 Park<\/strong> \u2014 or Letn\u00e1 Plain \u2014 is an extensive Prague park on the left bank of the Vltava opposite the Old Town, belonging to the Hole\u0161ovice cadastral area. It is a historically significant location, as shown by the bastions (fortifications) preserved to this day along the western edge of the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name derives from the word Lete\u0148, meaning Sun Hill. And it is precisely thanks to its elevated position that it offers views of Prague and its landmarks, such as Pet\u0159\u00edn, V\u00edtkov and Prague Castle. A public park was laid out here gradually from 1860 on the site of former vineyards, to a design by B. W\u00fcnscher and J. Braul. From 1863 work began on earthworks, paths and planting of the slopes along the whole length of Letn\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1950s the appearance of Letn\u00e1 Park was markedly affected by the construction of the monumental Stalin memorial, approached by a new, massive flight of steps. The memorial was removed in the 1960s, however, leaving only the plinth; since 1991 a giant metronome has stood in place of the original statue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letn\u00e1 Park serves its visitors for both active and passive relaxation. The park is very popular and offers plenty of options for all age groups: you can simply sit on a bench or in the grass and enjoy the beautiful view of Prague, use the asphalt surface for cycling or in-line skating, or go for a walk \u2014 with a dog, for instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
