In its upper reaches the channel has a natural character, apart from the reinforced sections where it flows through some municipalities.
In its middle section, below the Hostivař dam, the Botič takes the form of a naturally meandering stream with a series of pools. This area, home to protected and endangered bird species and to a community of aquatic animals, has been declared the Meandry Botiče natural monument.
The lower reaches are heavily affected by development and the channel here is continuously modified and reinforced. The catchment is characterised by a rapid onset of flood flows, which are further amplified — especially in the lower reaches — by the outfalls of the storm sewer system.
The Botič catchment above the Hostivař dam is fitted with 8 water-level gauging stations, 3 of which also have rain gauges. These are the Dobřejovice, Jesenice and Kuří stations. A further gauging station sits directly below the Hostivař reservoir and the last gauging station on the Botič
is in Nusle.
The Hostivař reservoir lies on the middle section of the Botič.
